Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University, maintained his endorsement of Donald Trump during an appearance Wednesday night on CNN.
Asked if he’d support the Republican presidential nominee even in the event recent sexual assault allegations against Trump prove true, Falwell said he “can’t answer a hypothetical question.”
“You’re saying, if he murdered someone would I forgive him,” he added. “That’s like asking something as ridiculous as that.”
Host Erin Burnett explained that while she had never experienced unprofessional conduct by Trump, she knew did someone “very well who did get kissed by Donald Trump without [her] consent” in 2010.
“I’m giving you a hypothetical because these women are coming forth and telling their story and he says it isn’t true,” she said, asking again: “If what they say is true, does Jerry Falwell Jr. vote for Donald Trump?”
Falwell confirmed he would vote for Trump “because I believe he’s the best qualified to be president of the United States.”
“I’m not gonna do anything to besmirch the character of any of these women,” he said. “It’s the heat of an election, it’s four weeks away from Election Day, and …; everybody’s in a frenzy.”
Falwell Jr. called The New York Times — which released testimony on Wednesday by two women who say Trump sexually assaulted them — “very anti-Trump.”
“What about the Donald Trump of today? Is he a changed man?” he added. “I think he is.”
In response to Falwell’s undying commitment to Trump’s campaign, Liberty University students and faculty issued a response via a new student-led organization called Liberty United Against Trump.
“Donald Trump does not represent our values and we want nothing to do with him,” the statement reads. “A recently uncovered tape revealed his comments bragging about sexually assaulting women. Any faculty or staff member at Liberty would be terminated for such comments, and yet when Donald Trump makes them, President Falwell rushes eagerly to his defense — taking the name ‘Liberty University’ with him.”
